Wind Power

Wapsi wind farmIn Minnesota, we have a huge supply of wind. This great resource combined with the reduced cost of wind power generation over the past several years means that wind power makes a lot of sense for Minnesotans.

SMMPA kite logoSMMPA owns and operates two 950 kW wind turbines (installed in March 2003), two 1650 kilowatt (kW) wind turbines located in member community Fairmont (installed in late 2004/early 2005) and two 1650 kW wind turbines located in member community Redwood Falls (installed in late 2004/early 2005). Additionally, SMMPA purchases all energy generated from 67 wind turbines totaling 100.5 megawatts at Dexter, Minnesota, 26 miles South of Rochester, Minnesota. With these combined wind turbines SMMPA supplies the energy needs of over 38,000 homes.

Currently 13.5% of the energy SMMPA supplies to its 18 municipally-owned member utilities comes from renewable and carbon-free sources. SMMPA has the 5th largest amount of wind power either owned or under contract of all municipally-owned utilities in the nation according to the American Wind Energy SMMPA wind turbineAssociation’s Annual Wind Industry Report for the year ending 2008. The U.S. Department of Energy's annual Wind Technologies Market Report ranks SMMPA fourth in the nation of all utilities with more than 100 megawatts of wind power, for estimated percentage of retail sales expected from wind power.
